Sun, 17 May 5: Can't talk with Jesse or our other loved ones who've gone from here, but we've still got our memories until we meet at the Endless Table; and with Jesse we've got some paintings, CDs, and videos, too. We both played that day in Wooldridge Park, at Austin's first love-in. McFarland may have been the drummer. He was a great one, now gone, too. Tue, 17 Feb I remember the time Jesse got some boxing gloves from somewhere. He and Dave Billingsley built a boxing ring in the vacant lot next to my house in Lubbock. They used to show up every Saturday afternoon with a case of beer and proceed to beat the crap out of each other for an hour or so. There were some drunk bikers there and they kept throwing firecrackers on the stage. After a couple of times, Jesse grabbed a mic and very politely asked them to stop. On the the next song one of them came up Jesse guitar taylor threw another one on the stage. At the end of this song, Jesse again took the mic and explained that if they did it again he would kick their ass. As the next song started, sure enough, here came another firecracker. Our beloved Jesse Taylor has passed away. Fire in the Water, Earth in the Air: This kaleidoscopic portrait of the West Texas music scene gets to the heart of what it takes to create art in an isolated, often inhospitable environment. As Oglesby says, "Necessity is the mother of creation. Lubbock needed beauty, poetry, humor, and it needed to get up and shake its communal ass a bit or go mad from loneliness and boredom; so Lubbock created the amazing likes of Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock, Terry Allen, and Joe Ely. On these pages, music becomes a part of Lubbock's living history. If you've never seen Jesse Taylor play roadhouse guitar, you have missed one of the truly visceral experiences of Texas music. The man is Rock-n-Roll. In the early days of my quest to write this story of Lubbock music, one of the first artists who agreed to work with me on by Lubbock project was Jesse "Guitar" Taylor. John was excited about the idea and said he'd help out any way he could. Not thirty minutes after we spoke, an excited John Scott was calling me back. He wants you to call him at his home right now. Jesse definately was interested in talking I promptly called the guitar legend at the number John relayed to me. Jesse answered with, "It's about damn time somebody writes this book! My dad was the basketball recruiter at Texas Tech and friends with Stubb, so we'd go over and have lunch with Stubb often when I was kid. That was until Jesse Taylor started rocking the joint with his Sunday night jams. They could have built recording studios and turned Lubbock into the Nashville of Texas Music but they just turn their backs. I was living in California at the...

His father was a laborer and alcoholic who left the family when Jesse was a child. His mother, Martha Fain, raised and supported Jesse and his two siblings. He worked the cotton fields and, with a little added money from his mother, bought his first guitar. The twelve-year-old taught himself to play, not by strumming chords like most beginners but going straight to the lead parts, trying to emulate his favorite musician at the time, guitar virtuoso Nokie Edwards of The Ventures. Soon Taylor formed his own band, The Epics, and played at junior high dances and small gigs around the neighborhood. With Jesse Taylor now among their number, the pickup players began calling themselves the T. Nichol House Band and soon were doing gigs all over town. From the first, Taylor played every day, almost always for hours at a stretch. The intensity and single-mindedness with which he approached his art left little time or focus for much else, especially for school, where his long hair and his choice of music set him apart from his classmates, making him an easy target for the disciplinarians. He dropped out and spent the next couple of years hopping freight trains to play music in and around San Francisco, then in Austin. In he played in the band of rhythm-and-blues singer Angela Strehli, headlining in Austin at the Vulcan Gas Company and various east side clubs. By the early s, Jesse was back in Lubbock, still playing guitar but without a regular band. In he was hitchhiking along East Broadway when C. By the group, along with Joe and Jesse, consisted of Lloyd Maines on pedal steel, Steve Keeton on drums, Gregg Wright on bass, and Ponty Bone on accordion and had quickly established a strong local following there and at other...
